San Martino garden

A shade garden in Naples

A small garden at the foot of Castel Sant’Elmo takes on new life after careful redevelopment and renovation.

The garden project started with a holistic analysis of the characteristics of the space, with the aim of understanding and solving all the technical problems that jeopardized the use of this garden.

The poor lighting and ventilation of the site had caused the appearance of mosses on the tuff pavement and concrete tiles, unsuitable for these particular environmental conditions, while the stagnation of rainwater was the cause of continuous infestations of mosquitoes.

The new light-colored non-slip stoneware flooring collects the light from the sky and reflects it, illuminating the space, while the new slopes of the ground allow for a rapid flow of water. Careful pruning of the most developed foliage, carried out with skill by Il Giardiniere Appassionato, has re-established proper air circulation capable of dispersing and drying residual moisture.

Through all these choices and actions it was possible to mitigate the microclimate of the garden in order to create a green space to be enjoyed all year round.

A dry-laid wooden deck, in order to preserve the permeability of the soil, will welcome the dining and work area, surrounded by flowers and sheltered by a simple bamboo screen.

A mix of strelitzia, hydrangeas, ferns, agapanthus africanus, canna indica, are the basic backbone of the planting design, in which new botanical species can be integrated year after year, following the evolution of the garden and establishing a relationship of coexistence and interdependence with the plants that live in this small ecosystem.
