The school in the park

Segrate Restarting Community Spaces

Segrate is a town which grew very fast in the last sixty decades, by building large condos here and there with little urban planning. The result is a polycentric city where different neighborhoods are separated from each other, a kind of urban structure that today shows various problems in terms of urban cohesion and territorial strategy.

The project therefore aim to build a new urban centre that will reconnect separate parts of the city and that finds the real engine of territorial regeneration in social and environmental sustainability.

The strategy aims to realize an integrated green system, connecting various ecological and environmental infrastructures, such as the Europa Park and the Centroparco under construction. At the same time, it aims to reconstruct a functional and sustainable urban fabric, recreating continuous street fronts and connecting existing cycle paths.

The school, designed by IN-NOVA Studio, is made up of a series of volumes that are articulated in the space around a large central courtyard, allowing the landscape to cross the didactic space seamlessly.

The result is a garden school, where open spaces are not only functional to recreation, but are configured as specific places for learning, in accordance with a conception of teaching oriented towards environmental sustainability, attention to nature and outdoor learning.

The new urban park adjacent to the school and the open-air market under the tree canopy are the other two elements that build this new urban center, which aims to generate new community spaces for the town of Segrate.
