On top of the Amalfi Coast

The typical anthropic landscape of the Amalfi Coast consists of a system of artificial terraces that have strongly shaped the mountains in order to obtain arable land.

The lack of maintenance together with the collapse of the central portion of the house led to the destruction of the dry stone walls that contained the terraces. The project aims at restoring the terrace system, adapting it to the needs of the new owners.

Located on the side of a mountain range overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, the project area is affected by the most diverse meteorological conditions that have led to the formation of very specific ecosystems. From 60 cm of snow during the winter to 35 ° C in the summer, with periods of drought that can reach up to 7 months and autumns where clouds full of sea salt condense even below the altitude of the garden.

The planting design moved from a careful survey of the botanical species present in the surroundings of the project area, in order to select plants that could take advantage of the particular climatic conditions while respecting the surrounding natural landscape.
