Landmark design Lab
The Landmark Design workshop, conceived and directed for Transluoghi IBRIDI 2019, was a collective research experience on the concept of landscape, its dynamic nature and the performative role of signals. The aim of the residence was to seek a hybridization between the community of Transluoghi and the landscape of Eastern Bussento.
The Landmark design laboratory was immediately characterized by an attempt to shift attention from the project to the process. In this sense, the phases of exploration, confrontation with local communities, design, construction and public presentation took the form of different but often contemporary moments of a single path of understanding and recreation of the landscape.
Navigating on sight in an unknown world requires confidence in the sensitivity and skills of all participants in the residency; for this reason horizontality and multidisciplinarity were the methodological backbone of the laboratory.
The drawing of mental, emotional and community maps has allowed us to build a coordinate system through which to orient ourselves: a compass made of strong images, common impressions, rivers, paths, mountains, stars. A collective imagination capable of restoring a choral narration of the landscape, through a language made up of shapes and signs that express the sense of places.
The output of the Landmark design laboratory is both a narrative and a choral interpretation of the landscape, which acts on multiple scales and dimensions: physically, through a circuit of signals installations that activate interactions between the human body and the surroundings; and digitally, by means of a multimedia map that tells the relationship between the Rio Bussentino valley and the anthropic community that inhabits it.
The signals are openly alien objects, which invite you to stop and observe the landscape. Thanks to the introduction of seats, frames, telescopes, the traveler is invited to look in the direction of the villages and naturalistic sites of Eastern Bussento, in a game of references that intends to establish connections between places that are both near and far at the same time.
Each installation presents a QR-code that refers to an interactive map, on which it is possible to trace the identity elements of the eastern Bussento valley, which help to communicate the unity of the territory: the Rio Bussentino, the ring circuit of the hiking trails, the fountains, the mills.
The network of landmarks created by TRANSLUOGHI is highlighted in red, inviting travelers to physically explore the area; almost a treasure hunt within the landscape.
